1. Review of what Radical Reference is and why we would want to do this:

To provide support to (local) activist community, opportunity for community service and outreach, participate in special projects of interest.

2. Discussion of becoming a formal organization by joining the Progressive Librarians Guild, where we would get more support and be more official.    There would be dues ($10/yr student low income, and $20/yr everyone else), officer positions, a peer-reviewed journal through the parent organization, and potential for bigger events. We could do both (RR and PLG) or just one. If PLG, we would need to see if we would need to be affiliated with SIRLS, and if so, how to go about that. We also would be interested in a timeline for how long it would take to become a chapter from both ends (being approved by PLG and SIRLS, if a student org, allowing community members/practicing librarians as well).

3. Examples and ideas for potential projects:

-Skillshares/free workshops (ex: fact checking, online research)

-Street reference at protests or to table at other community events

-Organizing events, such as a zine fest (see Madison Zine Fest as an example) or movie screenings (or possibly bringing Lost Film Fest to Tucson)

-Create and distribute alternative newsletters, zines, & etc.

-Promote voting for the 2008 election and provide information, help people to register to vote

-Use the African Library Project as a model to help bring needed books to local tribal libraries

-Involvement with the Afghan library projects on campus; possible speaker

 4. Final thoughts and wrap up:

-We would potentially meet once a month, but more often if necessary. Most likely, we would break into smaller groups to work on projects, which would meet more often. We would like to have our group grow, especially if we become a formal PLG chapter.

-Virtual students could join, but their involvement would have to be somewhat limited, because we would like to do a lot in Tucson--they could work on their own projects in Phoenix, etc., or just help us with virtual aspects, but either way, we are interested in including them on some level.

In attendance: Rachel, Amy, Charlotte, Sarah, and Nicole

Rachel will be looking into the process of starting a student organization through SIRLS, finding out the listserv information for everyone in the program (since the LSO one doesn't have everyone), and will try to reserve the SIRLS multipurpose room for our Jan 17 meeting (Thanks, Rachel!)

Amy will try to fancy up this wiki to make it look nicer and be better organized

Nicole will look into the process of starting a PGL chapter and get a timetable and post the minutes from the meeting (check)

All will think about projects we want to do, think about if we want to become a PGL chapter, and see if more people want to join us
